Welcome to L-Training's Instructor Information Page
Did you know that only registered Driving Instructors can charge for giving driving tuition? Even parents, family and friends cannot make any charge for taking you out! To become a registered driving instructor, there are a few conditions to meet, then there are three exams that must be successfully completed within a certain time. The exams are:
After the first two exams have been successfully completed, the trainee instructor can start teaching learner drivers using a Trainee Licence. You will know if your instructor is a trainee as they will display a trainee licence on the windscreen of their car:-
If the trainee fails to meet the required standard within three attempts, then they will not be allowed to continue to teach, and if they wish to try again to qualify, they must start right back at the beginning with the first exam. There is also a time within which this re-starting cannot happen. Once the third exam has been passed, the instructor becomes fully qualified, and is from then on known as a Driving Standards Agency - Approved Driving Instructor (or ADI). They will then display an ADI Licence to give instruction badge in the windscreen:-
Once qualified, the ADI is subject to ongoing exams, called "Check Tests". A check test is like a normal driving lesson, but a Senior or Supervising Examiner sits in the back of the car, and assesses the instructors knowledge and ability. The examiner is not there to comment on the abilities of the learner driver, but it can be very unsettling if you are asked to help your instructor with his check test! At the end of the check test, the examiner will take the instructor away, and discuss the test. He will then award the ADI with a "grade". A good Grade is regarded by some instructors as essential, and others as unnecessary. Basically, the grades go from 1 to 6 - a '4' means the instructor is Acceptable, '5' means Good, whereas '6' means Excellent. Anything below 3 means that the instructor must undertake further training and be retested again. If they get a low grade on the second test, then they will be removed from the register of instructors, and must cease to teach.
